Palanguzhi, also known as “Pallankuli” or “Ali Guli Mane,” is a traditional two-player board game popular in South India. It’s played using a wooden board with a series of small cups or pits in which the game pieces are placed. The objective is to capture the opponent’s pieces while sowing and collecting them in a strategic manner.
The game of Pallankuli involves the following basic rules:
- The game is typically played by two players.
- The game board consists of 14 cups or pits, with 7 on each player’s side, and usually uses cowrie shells or tamarind seeds as game pieces.
- At the beginning, each cup is filled with a certain number of shells or seeds.
- Players take turns to pick up all the seeds from one of their cups and sow them one by one into the subsequent cups in an anti-clockwise direction.
- If the last seed sown lands in an occupied cup on the player’s side, and the opposite cup contains seeds, the player captures both the last seed and the seeds in the opposite cup.
- The game continues until one side of the board is empty, and the player who has captured the most seeds wins.
